Rest your drink on a witty slice of history! Our Mayflower & Speedwell Illustrated Coasters tell the story of the ships that took the Pilgrim Fathers from Southampton to America 402 years ago.
Southampton artist Aaron Jay created these cartoons exclusively for Made in Here. Aaron, whose style you may recognise from his work for Google, has a brilliant knack for giving personality to things and places.
The illustration “So long, Speedwell” said Mayflower sums up the emotions the Pilgrims will have felt when departing for the New World in 1620. Instead of drawing a ship full of men, Aaron cleverly gave their emotions to the ships! So now you can toast the ships and the Pilgrims while you sip your drink (and protect your table!)
What is Speedwell? The Speedwell is the smaller ship that left Southampton along with the Mayflower. She had a noble history and had already fought against the Spanish Armada. Sadly, in 1620 she sprang a leak and couldn’t make the trip. Her passengers crammed onto the Mayflower, landing 66 days later at Cape Cod.
Aaron Jay’s work also features on our Southampton History Illustrated Coasters variety pack of four (£4.50). These coasters tell historical tales about Southampton’s medieval Bargate, a cowherd turned brewer, and the oldest active bowling green in the world – which happens to be in Southampton. The Speedwell & Mayflower Cartoon Coasters are also available as a four-pack plus solid pewter Mayflower pin badge (£5.95).
These coasters are packaged as a set of 4.
All our gifts are handmade by artisans here in the UK. Our Mayflower & Speedwell Illustrated Coasters are printed front and back on 100% eco-friendly board, and printed in a local printing press using vegetable-based inks. The tissue paper and stickers we wrap them in are biodegradable.
